What Would Blackbeard Say

about Bruce Lee?

Bruce Lee Enter the Dragon.
Bruce Lee Enter the Dragon.

Aye, a man-o-war for sure. Small in stature, but blimey, fast as a piece of loose rigging whipping across the deck in a storm. Comes at ye like a cat o'nine tails, hitting from all different directions. A small stick of dynamite can do a lot of damage!

Arrr, Bruce Lee be quick as a cat and deadly as a broadside volley. Here be the advice he gave me for close-quarter fightin' on a crowded deck. Beware, most of this advice is for serious fights, not trainin' or competition.

A skilled fighter never stays in one spot long; he be in constant motion to baffle his opponent. Aye, a movin' target be hard to hit. Adapt to the chaos, move with the tides of battle. Be flexible, like the sea in a storm. Water can be a peaceful mountain lake, or tidal wave that no man can stand against. A good warrior has the capacity to be both. Vary your distance and timin' continuously to confuse yer opponent.

Strike swift and true. In close combat, speed be yer ally. Strike like a serpent, quick and precise, and (in a real fight, not competition) before yer opponent can recuperate, hit him again and again til there be no more fight in him. Give no quarter, take every advantage. Stay just out of range of the opponent's simple punch, but not too far away to deliver an attack with just a short step forward. This be good advice for a sword fight also, just out of his cutlass range, but close enough with a short step to deliver yer own thrust.

Use the Environment to Yer Advantage. Like a clever navigator usin' the wind, use the deck to yer advantage. Duck behind barrels, swing from ropes, make the deck yer ally. Bruce called them 'weapons at hand', whether it be a pencil, a broom stick, or a tankard of ale. There be no such thing as a fair fight (outside of competition) so learn to use anything as a weapon.

Precision in movement means to move with balance. In the midst of the tempest, find yer center. Balance be the key to standin' firm against the surges of battle. Know what ye are capable of and wait for the enemy to make a mistake, then strike.

Learn to parry not just block. Every sailor has a chink in their armor. Study yer opponent, know their weaknesses, and exploit them like a well-placed cannon shot. Study to balance yerself, so that ye have very few weaknesses the opponent can take advantage of. A parry is just a slap to divert a blow. Blocking is force on force, and can cause ye to lose yer balance.

Feint and redirect, like a clever pirate. Mislead yer foe with feints and redirects. Keep 'em guessin' like a savvy pirate navigatin' through treacherous waters. Show yer opponent what he will think is a weakness and lure him into yer trap. In a serious fight, a kick in the groin or a jab in the eyes. Aim at the weak spots of yer foe. Strike to the throat, the knee, the shin, the nose.

Master the art of close-quarter grappling. In the crush of battle, know how to grapple. Close quarters be a dance, and sometimes ye need to lead with a dagger to the heart. But ye must know the ground game in case he does manage to take ye off yer feet. Many a good boxer or kicker has lost a fight after bein' takin' down.

Be aware of everything and everyone around. Even in the heat of battle, be aware of what is at yer back. Be aware of all that surrounds ye, for danger may come from any direction. Blackbeard himself be taken down by an enemy from behind, while occupied with one in front. If possible, get yer back to a wall.

Clue: The Rise of the Abbasid Caliphate centered in Baghdad, was one of the most powerful states in the world at this time. Under Caliph Al-Ma'mun, the caliphate emphasized scholarship, with the House of Wisdom in Baghdad becoming a renowned center for learning, before the skeleton key year in the Feb 2025 hunt.

Breathe, me heartie. Control yer breath like the steady rhythm of the ocean waves. Breathe deep and keep yer focus sharp. Ye can't fight if anxiety causes ye to get out of breath. If ye tense up, ye cut off the oxygen to the muscles.

Train hard, fight easy. Like a sailor practicin' with a cutlass, train hard so that in the chaos of battle, ye can fight easy. Muscle memory be yer ally. Fight with 'no mind', not havin' to process what be goin' on. Just reactin' instantly and automatically.

With Bruce Lee's wisdom, ye may learn to navigate the tumultuous seas of close-quarter combat. May his spirit continue to sail swift and true through the ages. Arrr, be like water, me heartie, and ye'll conquer any storm that comes yer way! Sometimes water near the shore looks peaceful and calm, but underneath is a rip current that will drag you under and out to sea.
