What Would Blackbeard Say
about Emotions
Part 1?

Well now me fire startin' little lass, listen well to the wisdom of Blackbeard himself on the matter of controllin' yer emotions on the high seas.
Ye see, a pirate's heart be as tempestuous as the ocean herself, but a wise buccaneer learns to navigate these stormy waters. First and foremost, ye must learn the art of patience. When the winds of anger or frustration be blowin', take a moment to breathe deep and steady yer course.
Next, remember that not every squall warrants a cannon blast. There be times when it be best to let the waves of emotion wash over ye like a gentle tide, rather than unleash the fury of the storm. Keep a clear head and weigh yer options afore ye act.
And finally, me lad, surround yerself with a loyal crew who be understandin' and supportive. A true pirate knows that he be stronger with his mates by his side, and they can help steer ye through the roughest of seas.
So, me hearties, take heed of these words and ye'll find yerself masterin' the art of controllin' yer emotions like a seasoned captain of the Seven Seas. Arrr!
To be truthful, Blackbeard be not very good at controlling me emotions meself, so let me quote this story taken from the book, perhaps it will be of some help.
(Quote from the book, but put into me own words.)
Arrr, after watchin' me mentor handle a very upsettin' situation with grace and calm, I asks him, "How do ye control yer emotions?"
He says, “I don’t be knowin' if I control me emotions. I feel the same emotions that every scallywag feels. What I try to do be to control me response to the emotions that I feel. I try to control me attitude and me actions, and do what be right, regardless of what emotions I’m feelin'.”
I says, “So how do ye do that?”
“I know who I be, and I know where I’m headin'. I’m a sinner saved by grace, me past has been forgiven, now I’m a child of the King, me future be assured, so why would I allow somethin' happenin' in the present to upset me?”
He could see that I be strugglin' with it, so he says, “One gentleman puts it this way; let’s say that ye be a Dallas Cowboys fan. Let’s say that they had won the Super Bowl and ye didn’t get to see it, so the next day ye sit down to watch a video of the game. Ye already know the end result, because it was on the television news and in the newspapers. At the end of the third quarter would ye lose control of yer emotions when the other team scored again, puttin' them ahead by twenty-one points? Nay! Ye’d be as cool as a cucumber. Ye don’t know what’s goin' to happen in the fourth quarter, but ye know the final score! I know the final score in life; I’ve read the book. None of us are goin' to make it out of this world alive, but if we be in a right relationship with our maker, we have a home in heaven waitin' for us.”
Arrr, by now he had figured out that I be referrin' to the stressful incident.
He says, “If God has blessed me more than another scallywag, whether with better looks, better health, more intelligence, more material wealth, or whatever, I don’t feel like that makes me any better than any other soul. It just makes me more thankful. If I spy people who be better off than meself, in any way, I don’t compare meself to them. Who be I to question fate? Besides that, almost all unhappiness be caused by comparison. Whenever ye feel unhappy, stop comparin' yer situation with someone else that ye think be doin' better than ye, and sit down and count yer blessings. Write down all the things that ye can be thankful for, and before ye know it, yer whole attitude will have changed.
If ye never compare yer life with others who have more, and if ye be thankful for what ye have, yer life will be filled with joy, and will be much more satisfyin’.”
(end of quote)
Well, me hearties, I hope that helps. If ye don't get control of a fiery temper, like Blackbeard's, ye may well end up at the bottom of the sea, just like meself.
Thanks for comin' aboard.
